The forest floor was never the most comfortable of places, though to a dragon who lives and sleeps on even harder rock the grass and soil seemed a calming bed, one which he was familiar with, but that had been long ago. His tail twitched slightly as his body relaxed, amazing that his legs curled up beneath him could take his huge weight without pain, only sometimes losing blood circulation like any animal.
"I can never know enough about your culture." He stated, his tail twitched slightly in the space between them. "Any culture that can raise a kind heart like Niara and in the next generation a cruel man like Damian is a race that I must ponder." He stated, knowing all too well of the tales of Damian's actions. "Every culture has its rotten eggs, but someone so vile puts even some of the Tetrieth, the fire dragons, to shame." He said with a half hearted chuckle, knowing that the statement was partially a joke, but also true.
He always had a difficult time understanding human motives, the natural splits and age of their race making each dragon quite predictable based on type and age. The young upstarts were always the ones getting into trouble and being slapped gently by their elders. The middle was a time of finding ones place, while the elderly guided those under them. At least, that was the structured, well known way, there were many places where slip ups happened and entire communities had to be restructured. Sadly, many dragons and smaller creatures died in those conflicts, humans caught in a deadly struggle of beings much more powerful than themselves.
"To not be judged by my race's size is rather refreshing Alianna." He admitted, stretching his relatively tiny wings, the small things barely seeming to add to his immense size, though combine they were far longer than a wolf's body. "There is prejudice and stupidity within every race, it is nature's way of allowing us to feel better about our own intelligence." He said, chuckling softly at the joke, his long time in solitude seeming to only improve his sense of humor. "Though I am curious, what do you know of my people?" He asked her, knowing that dragon's tended to be too secretive for their own good, afraid of contact with other races for a multitude of reason. Catarin found the advantages far outweighed those disadvantages, thus he was here, speaking to a human/wolf.

"There are some things about my culture I wish I didn't know. Like death and greediness. This and other things are horrible." Ali turned quickly and nibbled at one of her back legs. A flea was nibbling at that leg also. One of the downsides to living outside. "Like Damian. That man was a monster!" He was the reason her parents were dead. Whether it was directly or indirectly, she still held him responsible. She pushed him from her mind, to calm herself down.
Alianna gazed at Catarin Woodtongue and wondered what dragons were like. Especially fire dragons. Those beasts had always interested her, when Grisa had told her stories of them. To have power over an element as powerful and dangerous as fire was amazing. Ali's mind began to wander as she imagined herself as a big, bad flying and fire-breathing dragon.
Catarin's question brought the girl crashing back to earth. "I really don't know anything other than what Grisa told me." She winced when she said her friend's name outloud. It was still painful. "Nothing other than most, if not almost all, dragons are very secretive and don't like other races. They can have foul tempers. Like some humans."

Thereltolan smiled, enjoying her spirit and her apparent understanding of her culture's short comings and its strengths, something he rarely found someone could find within their own race. Catarin had that disadvantage, never having met an earth dragon outside of his own family. Thus he only had himself and his siblings to compare to, showing the calm nature of his family, which was apparently also a thing of his entire race. He sighed, settling into the soft ground, feeling the soil that was so much softer than the hard stone of his home. "All races give birth to some evil. Its only a matter of how large it is allowed to grow before it consumes others or itself." He said, watching as she bit gently at her own leg. He knew what she was doing, but it still seemed odd to him, having never found an insect strong enough to penetrate his scales.
"Dragons are not that different from other races. Perhaps a bit larger and longer lived than most, but we are still mortal like anyone else." He explained, well aware of his kind's desire to fabricate the truth and tell grand stories, never revealing their true histories. "We are very vain creatures, never wanting others to know of how we live and interact, afraid that such secrets might be used against us. In fact it just creates fear for us, something that I have grown to try and overcome. Do I kill? Yes, those that I must kill in order to survive. Do I live in a hidden cave? Yes, but only to keep myself from greedy eyes and avoiding more conflict. We share many of the same concerns Alianna, ours just always seem to effect more than just ourselves. Its rather lonely at the top of the food chain." He said with a sigh, lowering his wings along his flanks, becoming ever more relaxed within the forest that he had called home for so many years before his isolation.

It had been quite awhile since Alianna had talked with someone who seemed actually interested in what she had to say. This was nice and the girl was enjoying herself, even if the conversation was about the flaws of mankind. The girl was just so amazed to be talking with a real dragon that no matter the topic, she would be happy.
She gazed at the dragon's face as he spoke.
Ali was intrigued that Catarin said dragons weren't that different from other races. She had always thought them to be supreme, even above man. This dragon didn't seem to think so. As he talked about his own kind, the wolf absorbed all the information. "I hadn't ever considered that dragons could be like any other race. In stories they always seemed much more grand and regal. It's sad though, that dragons actually create the fear that people feel about themselves."
The wolf looked away for a second, then back at the enormous beast. "Lord Catarin, I left my belongings underneath a tree at Telian Lake; would you mind if I went back there to shift and gather my things?"

His wings twitched slightly against his flanks, gently fanning himself to drive the large amount of heat his enormous body created away from him. Even in the shade of the trees, his large amount of body heat kept his temperature still rather high, though that was nothing compared to his fiery kin. He opened his mouth and breathed gently, looking almost like a giant dog, except his tongue did not hang out of his mouth, nor did it appear designed to do so.
"Fear can be a powerful weapon, it is one that can stop conflicts before they can begin and start conflicts against those that cause the fear. There is one thing that I am afraid this has caused against my people, resentment. Who are all the grand tales about? Some humans, but dragons always dominate such stories. We crave the attention and yet drive that attention toward fear and awe, something that may be useful to some, but has proven a great obstacle for myself." He explained, shifting his tail slowly about behind him.
He began to shift about even more, sliding himself slowly into a standing position. "I am well aware of the lake nearby, it was another of the places that accepted me as its protector long ago. What is it you humans call it? Tally Lake?" He said, never having heard the human name for the place, only his own name for it. "I would gladly accompany you to this lake, I need to feel the familiar land once more. I understand your human needs of privacy, as strange as they seem to me, I will let you be and await you in the lake if you wish." He said, having stumbled upon Niara a few time in supposedly awkward moments, though he saw no harm, why did she have to hide her body beneath fake skins, anyway? He stretched carefully, his back arching like a cat as he carefully rose to his full height, though the only evidence of his previous accident lay in a few broken branches and a large indent where the tree had hit the ground. "Lead on, Nierokal Alianna, I wish to see the land that I had to leave so long ago."

The wolf smiled as the dragon said he would accompany her to Telian Lake. It was wonderful that she would be able to spend more time with the great beast. She got to her feet and stepped back as the massive lord also rose to his feet.
Ali trotted off in front of Catarin. She sniffed the ground as she went, checking, just checking for hidden animals or humans. Not that her ears wouldn't pick up movement from a few yards, the wolf just liked to reassure herself.
It wasn't but a few minutes before the pair reached Telian Lake. Alianna left Cat and trotted off the check her clothing and weapons. He had said something about awaiting her in the lake's water. If they were going swimming, there would really be no reason to get dressed.
She shifted back to human. Gathering up her belongings, the girl tied them into a bundle, Grisa's sword on top. After, she shifted to wolf again and carried her bundle to the lake's shore. Alianna dropped the bundle. Her bones were starting to ache from the shifts, but this would hopefully be the last for awhile.
The girl was human once more. She walked into the water, towards Catarin.

Theretolan rose to his full height, feeling his feet below him once more as he prepared to move once more. He gave a large shake, sending large amounts of dust and earth flying about him, once more careful not to harm his beloved forest. Once he was fairly dirt free he gazed down at the wolf, watching as she began to turn about and head north, back toward the lake. It had been nearly 30 years since he had seen its pristine waters and the wildlife that relied upon it for their survival. The animals who had learned to mainly ignore him, a more peaceful variety of predator, there to protect the sick and dying. He gave a sigh, breathing in the fresh, calm air before stepping off, following after the wolf, moving slowly so as not to cause anymore damage to the forest that he chose to aid and protect so many years ago.
The nierokal trotted in front of him, sniffing at the ground as they went. He tilted his head slightly, distracted by her strange behavior. He did not believe she was hunting, so what was she sniffing the ground for? She surely understood that his race had the keenest sight and hearing of nearly any other, didn't she? He let the thought fade from his mind as he looked up and saw the sun reflect into his face, reflecting off the surface of a large body of water.
He pushed his head through the trees, forgetting about the wolf for a moment as he once again saw the land he loved. The surface rippled with the light breeze, sending beautiful shards of reflecting light off into the woods, further reflecting off of his scales, seeming to give the earth about him a brownish glow. He sighed, bringing his body forth from the forest carefully, bringing himself to the edge of the water.
He gazed down into its depths, caught up in old memories of the many peaceful years he had stayed here. The water itself rippled beneath his head, though whether it was someway of the water welcoming him back or just his breath rippling the water he was not sure, nor did it matter to him. He slipped his right claw into the water, feelings its cool calm waters splashing cross his warm scales. There was nearly no sound, but he could imagine the water sizzling around his warm body as he brought his other claw into the cool water, welcoming it back about him. With a push, he slid his whole body from the shore into the water, sending a huge splash into the air as he dove down along the bottom, his powerful tail quickly pushing him out into deeper waters, just his spine and wings visible above the water.
It was like meeting an old friend again, the water seeming to flow easily over him, as if aiding his passage through its clear domain. He growled happily, watching as schools of fish bolted out of his path, sending flashes of color throughout the water. He pushed in deeper, finally totally submerging himself, bringing his whole body within the embrace of his lake. He pushed himself deeper, his large body barely showing any mark on the surface of the water anymore. He pushed himself downward, digging his claws into the soft mud before pushing off. He sailed through the short amount of water before bursting out into the air once more, giving a roar that shook the very waters and trees, such was his joy at returning home. He flipped into the air, curving his back as he began to turn upside down, gazing back down at the water. He caught sight of flesh and realized that Alianna must be entering the water. He was unable to do anything about it now, but he flipped 180 degrees to fall back into the water with a huge splash, sending a large series of waves outward as his giant form reentered the water. He groaned, quickly pushing off of the bottom again and returning to the surface, casting about with his eyes, looking to ensure the girl was all right. He had been so caught up that he had forgotten she was going to soon join him. The lake surely seemed to accept him, and it seemed to feel his worry. Before his very eyes the wave that he had just created suddenly halved in size, still coming at her just over her head, but enough so as not to drown the poor girl. He sighed, happily wagging his tail, showing the lake that he appreciated its help, for the brief times he still acted like a very large fledgling, not his true age. He waited patiently, hardly taking notice that she had left her belongings on the shore, simply waiting patiently for the girl to be safe and speak.

Alianna watched as the earth dragon played in the lake. She was surprised when he took flight. The girl had always wondered what it would be like to soar through the air. Catarin made it look so easy; all he had to do was spread and flap his wings, catch some wind beneath them and he was in the air. It was a truly beautiful sight.
What wasn't so beautiful was when he came hurtling back to the earth and lake. Him landing in the water made the biggest splash and waves the shifter had ever seen. It was coming straight for her. Ali took a deep breath and leaned into the wave.
She came back to the surface with the wave lolling away from her. The girl pushed hair from her eyes and kicked off from the bottom, swimming alittle further into the lake. She could barely touch here. The dragon was watching her. "The water greets you well, lord." Ali called to the beast. He maybe be an earth dragon, but it was as plain as day that Catarin Woodtongue loved water.

Catarin stood easily on the bottom, his head easily floating on top of the water from its large size and layer of fat keeping it buoyant. The water did indeed feel good, washing over him, cleaning off the years of dirt he had collected on him as well as a sense of joy. It was much like returning to see an old friend after years had passed, such was his tie to the earth, even water. He had missed this place, never truly feeling at home outside of the forest in his mountainous lair, but he had to remain there, for the safety of all of Larthen.
He simply smiled to the nierokal, seeing her for the first time in her human form. Niara had been only a little older than her when he had had to leave her, but he could see a part of her within this human. It took him a moment but he realized it, it was the look in her eyes. She did not fear him like most others, no, she respected him for his size and seemed to value him as a friend, something that he always had trouble finding.
"This land and I shared a bond for nearly fifteen years," he told her, gazing about at the forest about them. "It is like returning to a long lost love, the separation has only made us more fond of each other." He said with a chuckle, knowing the analogy to be a bit silly, but it was his best way to explain it.
He settled his legs down, resting gently on the bottom, feeling the fish and sea life glide over him as if he was not a dragon, but simply an obstacle in its way. That was what he sometimes wished to be, a rock, not causing fear, but simply being there. A hiding place to some or a support when he was needed. He was a killing machine, not that he wanted to be such, but he was, there was no way to change who he was.

"You sound like a poet. Speaking of lost loves and strong bonds." It made Alianna grin. Tales told about dragons made them ruthless, uncaring creatures. But if only those storytellers could meet Catarin Woodtongue. That meeting would certainly change alot of views.
As the shifter tredded water to keep afloat, the sun's rays caught the water's movements and sent tiny sparkles throughout the small waves. It was pretty, all the little color sparkles. Grisa, even with her gruffness, had always enjoyed colors. She was one to sit and watch a sunset.
Ali rolled onto her back to float. This way she wouldn't get too tired from tredding. She just let the little waves move whichever way they wanted to.

Thereltolan could feel the cool waters as they rushed over his still form, cooling off his ever warm body, making him feel more and more like a rock. He smiled, knowing the idea was silly as he settled down, the mud floor gently forming to his shape, pressed down by his large weight, even with the weight defying effects of the water.
He growled slightly, feeling the vibrations shake through him and ripple in the water about him. "I have had hundreds of years to reflect upon my life, its quite a long time to think. Especially when my mission is to sit in a cave, protecting those who try to walk unknowingly through End'skel Pass." He said, looking back over the trees, but the trees themselves were too tall and thick that he could not even see the distant mountains. "There is a lot of time in my life where I have done nothing but think and reflect. One never knows how much one has done in their life until they let themselves sit down and think about it." He said with a small smile, watching as she moved over onto her back, floating there just a short distance from his face.
It amazed him, how easily she seemed to trust him, a giant monster, so quickly. It would actually be very easy to snap his neck out and bite down upon her, probably killing the human without trouble. Of course, he did not desire to do so, but the idea had to be somewhere in her head of what the creature she speaking to was, a natural predator, even of humans. He sighed, letting the dark thoughts slip form his mind. She was trusting and that was what he wanted, a friend who could believe in him and not be afraid.

Her eyes too turned to look at the Pass, but were hampered by the trees. She had never been to that certain part of Larthen. Grisa had normally kept to forests for protection. Ali really did love the forests but had always wanted to be able to travel on the roads, meet people, and serve for the Royal family of Larthen.
"I haven't done much in my life. Never been to a big city, or even really out of the forests." The girl sighed as she floated around Catarin's head. This dragon was a contradiction of all Ali had heard as a little girl. He didn't have a bad temper. He hadn't snapped her neck or bitten into her body. It was amazing. Alianna was happy to have finally found a friend.

The human seemed curious, gazing up at the mountains as well, though he knew from her lower view point her view would totally be blocked by trees. The pass seemed so far away from here, yet he knew he had made the trek in barely over an hour, his long legs making the trip very quickly, even if his wings were too small for flight. He did not care about that, he simply walked like most other creatures, enjoying the feel of the earth beneath his claws, the sky could be left to his other brethren.
Her words surprised him, believing that all humans at least at one point in their lives had lived in civilization, at least at one point requiring them to travel to larger settlements for trade or taxes. "You are a strange one. Even Kiara had gone to cities when she was but a wyrmling," he said, watching her ever relaxed air, even around him. "You truly are shunned from society like no other, aren't you nierokal?" He muttered, his tail sliding easily through the water, stirring up the water gently about him. She was right, even as a dragon of earth, he did enjoy the water, especially a body of water that was so familiar to him. He beat his wings gently, stirring up the water about him and sending small waves at the human, nothing big enough to have any chance of harming her, just being playful and making it more fun.

She turned from the mountains, not seeing any point in trying to see through the trees. Alianna knew that the Pass was dangerous, but had always wanted to see the mountains. They must be very pretty.
"My friend kept me from people. At a request from my parents before they went to battle and died." She thought about Grisa's gruffness but also warmth at the bad times. She had comforted Ali as she grieved for her parents when she was old enough to understand. The woman had been a good guardian and friend. "Yes. For what I am and for what people fear of me."

Thereltolan simply watched the waves roll out from him, the water rippling across his body and hers as he watched her float about, his own body securely on the bottom of the lake. He found it very interesting, he had met two Niero.... shifters, since he had emerged from his cave, yet he found he could empathize with both of them. This one, Aella, for the fear and shunning that she received from the humans, though it must hurt her more, being a human herself. The other shifter, Danu, had been because of the monster, the predator hidden within both of them, a killing machine that must kill and hunt to kill to survive.
Catarin stirred, standing up from the lake, casting his eyes about the lake. He saw her equipment sitting there by the lake and the several trees surrounding the lake, but there was nothing else, not even a deer leaning over to take a drink from the cool waters, nothing like how he remembered it at all. He could not even hear many birds, the forest that was usually full of them seemed somewhat quiet and still. "Damian has done a lot of damage, to the very land and to the people of Larthen..." he said, turning away from the trees to gaze down at her. "People fear us, you and I, even though there is so much worse to fear in this world, like a man that was allowed to climb in power, until he was nearly too powerful to defeat." He said, shaking his head and gazing down at her. "They fear the unknown, but do not wish to know the truth of it either, humans can be a rather rash and foolish race sometimes. I think it may be the metal things they wear on their heads whenever they come to my cave..." he said, shaking his head, remembering all the knights that had come to slay him, forcing him into combat. Only one had gotten out alive, the small fleshy creatures were hard to hit away and not kill.
